Linux/Moose: Malware Going After Facebook

ESET Uncovers New Threat Attacking Routers, Performing Fraud on Social Networks and Stealing Network Traffic.

Linux/Moose is a malware family primarily targeting Linux-based consumer routers, but is also known to infect other Linux-based embedded systems. Once infected, the compromised devices are used to steal unencrypted network traffic and offer proxying services for the botnet operator. You can read more on this phenomenon in an in-depth security research paper titled ‘Dissecting Linux/Moose’ now available on WeLiveSecurity.com.
In practice, these malicious capabilities are used to steal HTTP cookies to perform fraudulent actions on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and other sites, which include generating non-legitimate "follows", "views" and "likes."
“Linux/Moose is a novelty when you consider that most embedded threats these days are used to perform DDoS attacks,” explains Olivier Bilodeau, Malware Researcher at ESET.
What’s more, according to ESET researchers, this type of malware has the capabilities to reroute DNS traffic, which enables man-in-the-middle attacks from across the Internet. Moreover, the threat displays out-of-the-ordinary network penetration capabilities compared to other router-based malware. Moose also has DNS hijacking capabilities and will kill the processes of other malware families competing for the limited resources offered by the infected embedded system.
“Considering the rudimentary techniques of Moose employed to gain access to other devices, it seems unfortunate that the security of embedded devices doesn’t seem to be taken more seriously by vendors. We hope that our efforts will help to better understand how the malicious actors are targeting their devices,” concludes Bilodeau.

Porn Clicker Returns to Google Play ESET Research: malicious app performs click fraud on unsecured Android devices

Trojan Porn Clicker, masquerading as popular app called Dubsmash, has yet again returned to Google Play Store after being pulled from the offering almost a month ago. Detailed information on this recurring threat is now available on WeLiveSecurity.com.
Surfacing for the first time more than month ago, Dubsmash 2 has made its return appearance on Google Play last week. Since then it has been successfully re-uploaded four times – always containing the same malicious code.
Although the fake app that bears the malicious code poses no actual harm to the average user, the problem arises with pay-per-click campaigns, as the porn clicker trojan was created to perform click fraud. Once activated, the malware generates a lot of internet traffic, resulting in high bills. Interestingly, ESET found that this app will almost exclusively attack Android devices without a security solution installed.
“If no AV software is installed then Dubsmash 2’s true functionality is activated. The trojan then proceed to request porn links from its server. These links will be loaded every 60 seconds into WebView inside an invisible window,” says Lukáš Štefanko, Malware Researcher at ESET.

The whole story about porn clicker trojan is now available on WeLiveSecurity.com.

Fake Minecraft Apps Downloaded by Thousands on Google Play, reports ESET Over 30 scareware apps threatening Android users worldwide.

ESET researchers have discovered more than 30 fake applications available for download on the Google Play Store. The malicious applications, which pretended to be cheats for the popular Minecraft game, have been installed by more than 600.000 Android users, reports ESET on WeLiveSecurity.com. Following ESET‘s notification Google has removed the rogue apps from the store.
ESET detects the scareware apps as Android/FakeApp.AL. Despite poor user reviews and negative comments, the scareware has spread massively during the past months. “The seriousness of this threat lies in the fact that it may have been downloaded by almost three million users from the official Google Play store,“ says Lukas Stefanko, Malware Researcher at ESET.
The scareware techniques inside the fake apps are used to trick victims into registering for a premium-rate service. “To avoid the installation of malicious or unwanted applications, refrain from downloading apps from unofficial sources and keep security software on your Android up-to-date,“ concludes Stefanko.

Software AG Upgrades Terracotta In-Memory Data Management Open Source Offerings

PRESS RELEASE
Software AG Upgrades Terracotta In-Memory Data Management Open Source Offerings

  • Contributes industry leading off-heap storage under Apache license
  • Strengthens commitment to existing open source projects

Software AG (Frankfurt TecDAX: SOW) announced several production-ready updates and improvements for its open source projects that form the core of Terracotta In-Memory Data Management platform, a platform used for boosting performance, scalability, and building real-time applications.

Matthias Braeger, software engineer at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, said: “We control and monitor technical equipment on a 24/7 basis across the CERN site and rely upon highly scalable, reliable, flexible systems. Therefore, we really appreciate Software AG’s commitment to open source software as it enables us to cluster projects already using Ehcache.  Moreover, we can better leverage in-memory data management to derive real-time insights from sensor data to help us manage the technical infrastructure of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).”
Software AG’s Terracotta helps developers easily leverage in-memory storage for current and emerging data workloads. By holding data in-memory, existing applications can be accelerated so more customers can be served and conventional database storage and license costs saved.
Key extra functionality delivered as part of Terracotta Open Source Kit (4.3) includes:
  • Distributed storage: developers can store data in a distributed, highly fault-tolerant cluster;
  • Off-heap storage: applications can use Terracotta to store data outside of the normal Java heap – several terabytes on each node versus a few gigabytes that Java heap supports;
Manish Devgan, Senior Director of Product Strategy & Management, Software AG noted: “The Terracotta platform, serving as the backbone of Ehcache – the most widely used caching technology in the industry - has been known for many years for standards support and commitment to open source projects. These new contributions deepen that commitment and enhance Terracotta further as being the leading In-Memory Data Management platform.”

Developers can download the source code for Terracotta 4.3 open source kit or become a contributor: http://terracotta.org/community/source.  Additional information can be found on the Terracotta community Big Data blog: http://blog.terracotta.org/.

Software AG Makes Progress with the Digital Business Platform

bbb

·         Significant progress  with customer traction and partner ecosystem expansion
·         6-Month  release cycle continues to drive fast innovation and feeds customer requests
·         New platform functionality and deployment models available

Software AG today revealed significant progress in customer traction and partner expansion with its Digital Business Platform. The Digital Business Platform is the critical technology driver and enabler for enterprises pursuing digital transformation (see infographic).
Software AG’s Digital Business Platform delivers a wider range of capabilities that enable enterprises to quickly build business applications for the digital age. Conventional, off-the-shelf ERP and application software products are designed to support existing and predictable business processes – this means they cannot be adapted fast enough for changes in the business; the Digital Business Platform supports the development of applications for new, digitized processes, which did not exist in the past.
Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Wolfram Jost, Software AG said: “Digital applications are adaptable by design and ‘built to change’. Differentiating applications for the digital transformation cannot be bought off-the-shelf, they have to be built on an advanced development platform. And, most importantly, these platforms are the future of enterprise computing, for cloud, hybrid cloud and on premise deployments.”
Digital Transformation At Work: Digital Business Platform Enables Customer Centricity
Transformation is a major theme for enterprises as they strive to become digital, with  customer centricity being the major competitive advantage. This can be achieved through real-time visibility into one’s own business operations, identifying potential bottlenecks and through automated and optimized business processes, reacting dynamically to changing business environments.
Digitization Is Making Progress Worldwide
Dr. Wolfram Jost, Software AG also noted: “We see that digitization is progressing on a worldwide scale. A major telecomunications company in Australia launched a new business process transformation to get their products and services to market five times faster. In France, a leading semiconductor manufacturer wanted an order, invoicing and payment system to help them identify and quickly respond to supply chain delays. And in Germany, a logistics company needed a system to help them respond to their customers more quickly as well as offer a broader portfolio of services. In each case, these companies chose the Digital Business Platform as the foundation to digitally transform their businesses.”
Software AG Drives 6-Month Development Cycle For Digital Business Platform
The Digital Business Platform is a service-oriented, event-driven and API enabled development environment with many high-level, out-of-the-box application services to support the creation of integration, process, decision, event and programming logic. The platform is cloud- and mobile-enabled, supports the development of micro services and follows the priciples of a software defined architecture. Container managment is included for ease of deployment. Major improvements have been accomplished in the five core components of the Digital Business Platform since its initial launch six months ago, including:
1.       Business and IT transformation - ARIS and Alfabet: The latest Alfabet release enables more effective planning and management of  the enterprise landscape with new reporting capabilities such as geo-maps for regional performance analysis and integration with Technopedia® IT catalog for greater precision in managing the enterprise technology portfolio . 3.       Integration - webMethods:  The new release 9.8 substantially enhances and expands Software AG’s cloud offerings, improves developer productivity and empowers business users’ productivity with process and task improvements while delivering better analytics performance.
4.       Agile processes - webMethods AgileApps: AgileApps provides subject-matter experts and developers the capability to visually build and deploy process-driven solutions in days or  weeks rather than months or years.
5.       Intelligent business operations - Apama: Apama Streaming Analytics is at the core of Software AGs IBO offering and is the basis upon which companies can manage fast ‘Big Data’ and the increasing impact of the ‘Internet of Things’. The new Apama version brings a much-anticipated capability for horizontal scalability and availability: Apama Queries. This lets business analysts and developers create scalable and elastic applications that process events originating from very large populations of real-world entities.

In addition, Adabas & Natural have been extended to provide comprehensive integration capabilities with the Digital Business Platform. The latest update, Event Analytics for Adabas, audits sensitive Adabas operations in real-time used in critical business applications.

All new features are now available in this new release.
