ESET Go Explore Dropion Reaches Stratosphere in Unique Social Gaming Experiment

Prague, Czech Republic ESET has launched (together with its partners) a gondola called Dropion into the stratosphere. For this unique social gaming experiment dubbed Stratocaching, ESET partnered with a group of young technology enthusiasts from Czech “No Rocket Science” and Technet.cz.

In all, more than 200-thousand online viewers and 13-thousand players watched in real-time as the Dropion soared to the stratosphere, releasing a dozen GPS-tracked seeds and landing safely in a village 50 kilometers from Prague, Czech Republic. Thousands of people searched for these seeds from near-space with the help of their smartphones in this world premiere of Stratocaching - a geocaching game with a space twist, as reported by Technet.cz, a respected and most visited Czech technology news portal.

Exploring is an activity that enriches every individual. It allows us to create, relax and get inspired by new ideas. ESET was proud to be the main partner of the Stratocaching experiment and our team has great respect for the talent and enthusiasm of its organizers. We all enjoyed the moments as ESET Go Explore Dropion touched the stratosphere,” says Jaroslav Fabian, Marketing Director of ESET Czech Republic, a subsidiary of ESET.

Stratocaching was the first of its kind gaming experiment in the world, launched in a country where geocaching is quite popular (Czech Republic ranks 4th globally based on Geocaching.com). The project was 16 months in the making and involved scientists, academicians, professionals, companies as well as enthusiasts who took part in the pre-launch preparations. Technet.cz highlighted the success of this gaming experiment with elements of science as follows: “This experiment also introduced some aspects of near-space physics, meteorology and technology, and for the enthused fans put space literally within grasp.”

In addition, Lupa.cz, a Czech news portal, has honored the Stratocaching project and its main partner ESET, as the best Internet Project in Czech Republic. It received the Crystal Magnifying Glass 2013 Award in its annual Special Award Category.

“God particle” scenario at the Software AG booth at CeBIT 2014: CERN and University of Marburg win the Idea Contest

Students at University of Marburg present a big data scenario using Apama, a Software AG product, for evaluating huge data volumes from the world’s largest particle accelerator

With its third annual CeBIT Idea Contest, the University Relations department at Software AG opens up the opportunity for universities and research institutes all over the world to develop an exhibit for CeBIT 2014. This year’s winners have now been chosen: A collaborative partnership between CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva, Switzerland, and the University of Marburg, Germany, will create a showcase project. The University will receive a grant of €10,000 to finance the project. The showcase they are developing for the Software AG booth at CeBIT 2014 will utilize Apama to perform intelligent analysis of event streams in real time in an attention-getting scenario from the real-world environment at CERN.

CERN’s research objective for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s largest particle accelerator at 26.7 km, is to generate and study both known and yet-unknown elementary particles in extensive detail. To this point, its greatest success has been finding experimental evidence of a new elementary particle, sometimes called the “God particle” (Higgs Boson particle).
The collision of protons and lead ions in the LHC creates enormous volumes of data that are evaluated with the help of an IT infrastructure: Approximately 10,000 server applications analyze the physical data and in turn generate log data streams and monitoring data. This also includes status information for these applications and commands that control them. As winner of the CeBIT Idea Contest, students at the University of Marburg will collaborate with CERN to create a system using Apama, Software AG’s product for Complex Event Processing (CEP), to simulate these massive data volumes in real time, process them further and maintain data persistence.

Software AG provides €10,000 in financial support for this idea contest to underscore its commitment to the higher education sector. Professor Dr. Bernhard Seeger from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at University of Marburg and his group of students are very excited about the project. “I’m thrilled about winning this year’s CeBIT Idea Contest and that the students can expand their knowledge of Complex Event Processing in such an interesting project with our partner, CERN. We have an excellent opportunity here to demonstrate the performance scope of CEP technology in collaboration with an innovative company like Software AG.”

Matthias Bräger, an employee at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland, is equally excited about the collaborative partnership with the University of Marburg, which is contributing a high level of expertise in CEP. “I’m very excited to see the new pattern recognitions that could emerge from this showcase project, and Apama from Software AG could be a new option for our existing IT infrastructure.”

Jürgen Powik, Director of University Relations at Software AG, is very satisfied with the response to this year’s contest and the high number of submissions. “The collaboration between the University of Marburg and CERN opens up the opportunity for us to visually demonstrate the processing of big data, the top theme for CeBIT 2014, in a real-world scenario. At our booth, people can see how valuable knowledge can be gained and visualized from enormous data volumes and complex events.”

Daar is heel waarschijnlijk iets mis mee.

Software AG invests in new University Relations Program

The company’s new University Relations program will introduce the four forces to universities worldwide as part of a program to benefit research and teaching

Software AG plans to introduce the four forces, big data, social, cloud and mobile computing, to colleges and universities through its enhanced University Relations program. The new program is aimed at students, professors and other faculty members in business management and information technology departments. Online communities will enable students and faculty not only to access Software AG products, but also to engage with specialists from companies and user groups.

Jürgen Powik, director of University Relations at Software AG, explains, “Providing a solid, market-oriented education to future managers is key to our ability to innovate.” Software AG therefore invests in close collaboration with institutions of higher learning. The education packages for the four forces, big data, cloud, social and mobile, include free software, e-learning and video materials for students’ self-guided study as well as materials for teaching staff. By way of a market-based scenario, students delve into concrete applications of the products. The big data education package, for example, includes 50 million data records.
Powik expects 100 departments worldwide to take advantage of Software AG’s new offering in 2014, which means that 1,500 students will be trained in the specialized field of the four megatrends next year alone. This brings Software AG significantly closer to its goal of establishing innovative technology know-how at university level to prepare IT professionals and entrepreneurs for the future.
Colleges and universities can continue employing Software AG’s software in other scenarios and for academic or research projects for free. This not only ensures the independence of academia and research, but also that institutions of higher learning tap and promote their innovation potential.
The program also features other services, which have been available and readily utilized for several years now, for example, guest lectures by Software AG specialists about the company and its products. These specialists serve as first points of contact for students and faculty. Students can glean personal insight to Germany’s second-largest software company during visits to Software AG, internships and work-study programs. Furthermore, Software AG provides individual support to students in completing research projects and theses through the availability of software and infrastructure. After finishing college, young professionals and entrepreneurs can also depend on finding a strong partner in Software AG.

Software AG : nieuw omzetrecord in derde kwartaal in BPE-tak

Business Process Excellence kent stabiele groei

*** AV-Comparatives, Single Product Test, Internal Real-World Protection Test on version 7 products run alongside the official August 2013 test on version 6: http://www.av-comparatives.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/avc_factsheet2013_08.pdf
**** Harris Interactive on behalf of ESET conducted online survey within the United States in September 2013 among 2,089 adults ages 18 and older.

ESET Scores High in VB100 Comparative Review on Windows 7 Pro

CEO of ESET North America Andrew Lee Holds Keynote Speech at VB 2013 Conference: Ethics and the AV industry in the Age of WikiLeaks

Bratislava, Berlin - ESET, the global leader in proactive digital protection with a record of 10 years in consecutive VB100 awards  with its ESET NOD32 technology, has earned another VB100 Award, already 81st, from Virus Bulletin, UK-based independent security software testing authority. Its product ESET NOD32 Antivirus 6 scored high in all categories of the latest test on Windows 7 Pro OS.  In addition, ESET research teams will have a  strong presence at the VB 2013 Conference starting today in Berlin, including Andrew Lee, CEO ESET North America, opening with a keynote speech titled Ethics and the AV industry in the age of WikiLeaks.

In its latest August comparative review, Virus Bulletin has called ESET a “provider with a flawless record” and refered to ESET NOD32 Antivirus 6 as “simple to install”, “very speedy updates” “combining unfussy good looks with comprehensive finetuning controls”. And VB  continues: “ESET adds another VB100 award to its tally, maintaining its 100% pass record going back over a decade”.  ESET NOD32 technology has received more VB100 awards than any other AV software vendor on the market.

From October 2 until October 4, 2013, ESET researchers are taking part and presenting at the Virus Bulletin 2013 Conference in Berlin with Andrew Lee, CEO ESET North America, delivering a keynote speech.

The events of the last few years from Bradley Manning to Edward Snowden have brought with them a tranche of new ethical issues. On the one hand the 'old-school' approach is to see malware, detect malware, but it is increasingly likely that in future (if not already) companies will come under pressure from government agencies and perhaps be compelled by law, to avoid detection, disclose data or report on customer activity. Is there a need for a collective response from the industry?,” states Andrew Lee in his conference abstract which highlights the content and philosophy of his address. “What are the issues around trusting sample or vulnerability sharing with companies known to share (or to be compelled to share) such information with governments?,” continues CEO of ESET North America. In his keynote speech, Andrew Lee aims not to provide definitive answers, but tries to open a wider conversation by examining some of the issues and asking the relevant questions.

In addition, ESET researchers are presenting the following papers:

  • What can Big Data Security learn from the AV industry? – Stephen Cobb, ESET Security Evangelist, ESET Malware Researcher, delivers  paper, where he examines the history of pioneering threat data, exchanged over time between competing vendors, private enterprises, public institutions, and non-governmental organizations, sharing  of lessons that can inform the evolution of Big Data Security. Big Data Security is this year's hot information security concept, a key element  encompassing the use of shared threat data, along with internal data, to detect and mitigate threats to information systems.
  • The Real Time Threat List – in this presenatation the authors, Righard Zwienenberg, ESET Senior Research Fellow, Richard Ford from the Florida Institute of Technology, and Thomas Wegele from  Avira, explore the shortcomings of the WildList, and introduce their solution, the Real Time Threat List (RTTL).
  • ACAD/Medre: industrial espionage in Latin America? - Robert Lipovsky, ESET Security Intelligence Team Leader and  Sebastian Bortnik, ESET Latin America Education & Research Manager will showcase the investigation of a series of events of an impactful ACAD/Medre, a signature created for a piece of malware attacking the popular design software.
  • Mac hacking: the way to better testing? – ESET Research Fellow David Harley with ESET Security Researcher Lysa Myers will elaborate on Mac security:  Macs have fewer threats and there are fewer prior tests on which to base a testing methodology, so establishing sound mainstream testing is tricky. But as both Macs and Mac malware increase in prevalence, the importance of testing the software intended to supplement the internal security of OS X increases too. Their paper looks to examine the testing scenarios that are unique to Macs and OS X, and offers some possibilities for ways to create a test that is both relevant and fair.

ESET Launches Root Detector Kit for Mac OSX

ESET® Rootkit Detector is a new security tool for Mac® OS X that scans for malicious kernel extensions attempting to change operating system behavior by hooking inside the OS. When the rogue kernel extensions hook inside the OS X, they can bypass any security measure thus allowing complete access of system privileges.

ESET Rootkit Detector is a simple and effective tool for detection of rootkits on OS X platforms. With this tool we aim to help the users to detect modifications in the OS X kernel memory, that might indicate presence of a rootkit in the system,” says Pierre-Marc Bureau, ESET Security Intelligence Program Manager.

Over the course of last year, ESET has observed multiple rootkits targeting OS X. With rootkit codes readily available online, systems have been compromised without the knowledge of the owner. Rootkits such as OSX/Morcut and OSX/Crisis have been used to spy and steal information of unsuspecting users.

ESET Rootkit detector provides an intuitive and user friendly way to check the integrity of the kernel and provide information about potential problems. It supports Snow Leopard (10.6.0) up to the latest version of Mountain Lion (currently 10.9.3). Additionally, it works on Intel 32-bit and 64-bit kernel.

For more information on the investigation of the rootkits targeting OS X visit WeLiveSecurity blog post or ESET Rootkit Detector product page.
